There had been no signs of trouble at all. Then, without any prior indication, the engine management light illuminated on Mr J’s 2018 Range Rover Velar, joined by a dashboard message relating to the engine oil system.

An unexpected oil-related warning is enough to worry any vehicle owner. The Range Rover Velar engine warning lights left Mr J understandably anxious. What had gone wrong? Was it safe to keep driving? And would the situation deteriorate if left unaddressed?

That alone can be enough to illuminate the engine management light and generate an oil-related warning message on the dashboard, even if the oil level is perfectly adequate. The warning relates to the engine’s ability to control oil flow to the piston cooling system, not necessarily to oil quantity.

The fault code was now recorded, so the logical next step was a thorough investigation to determine precisely what had caused the Range Rover P25A9 fault.

P25A9 Range Rover Diagnostic: Pinpointing the Cause Step by Step

The fault code from the initial scan provided a solid starting point for the P25A9 Range Rover diagnostic. It flagged an open circuit in the piston cooling oil control circuit, but it couldn’t tell us whether the problem originated in the wiring, the connector, the valve, or another part of the circuit. Each possibility had to be examined and eliminated through a structured process.

Step 1: Reviewing manufacturer technical resources

Next, the connector at the piston cooling oil control valve was checked, together with the individual terminal pins within it. Issues such as a poorly seated pin, degraded contact surfaces, or corrosion can produce an open circuit reading even when the wiring is fully intact.

  • The connector and its terminals were in good working order, showing no signs of corrosion or physical damage.

Step 4: Circuit analysis using an oscilloscope

To go beyond what a visual check could confirm, our technicians connected an oscilloscope to test the electrical integrity of the wiring between the engine control module and the piston cooling oil control valve. This captured the signal and supply behaviour under live conditions, rather than relying on a static resistance check alone.

  • The wiring tested within normal parameters, confirming the electrical path between the control module and the valve was intact.

Step 5: Direct testing of the piston cooling oil control valve

With every other part of the circuit now cleared, the valve was the remaining variable to investigate. Dealer-level diagnostic software was used to activate the valve while our technicians observed how it responded.

  • The valve did not respond as expected. Testing indicated the valve had failed, confirming it as the source of the Range Rover P25A9 fault.

This methodical process allowed our technicians to rule out every other element in the circuit with confidence, confirming the valve itself as the single point of failure.

Completing the Range Rover Oil Control Valve Replacement

With the failed component positively identified, our front-of-house team contacted Mr J to present the results of the investigation.   • A concluding system scan confirming no additional fault codes were stored and the oil-related warning message had cleared.
